One of the major components of the Children’s Board-led child safety campaign is safe sleep tips and information. A major source is the Healthy Start Coalition Safe Baby website. There you will find information about: You and your caregivers can help prevent suffocation and accidents during sleep by providing a safe sleep environment for your baby. Babies should always be placed on their backs to sleep in a safety-approved crib or basinet with a firm mattress and a tight-fitted sheet. One of the operative tips to keep your child safe is the phrase “Back to Sleep,” which is the safest way to place your child at rest. No additional items such as bedding, bumpers, or toys should be in the crib. Adults should not sleep or bed share with babies because of the increased risk of accidental suffocation. Furniture and adult beds are not built with the baby in mind and therefore can be dangerous for a sleeping baby. While Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and Sudden Unexpected Infant Death (SUID) are not always preventable, these safe sleeping tips can help decrease the risk to your baby. Click here to visit the Studio 10 website on CBS station Channel 10 in the Tampa Bay area and look for the Children’s Board-sponsored segment called “Video: Safe Sleep” for televised tips to keep your baby safe at bedtime or naptime.
