Early Literacy Matters (ELM)
Early Literacy Matters (ELM) mission is to create opportunities that enable three to five-year old children to be successful when they enter kindergarten. The goal of the program is to promote emergent literacy skills through direct coaching in early childhood classrooms; supporting professional development of early childhood educators; and promoting literacy activities within the home. The program utilizes a coaching model that integrates modeling, observation and feedback between a literacy "coach" and a classroom teacher.
Early Literacy Matters (ELM) assists early childhood educators to develop and implement classroom strategies that are research-based and standards driven, by:
• Establishing print-rich environments
• Designing developmentally appropriate classrooms
• Creating specific areas for reading and writing
• Providing training in the basic components of emergent literacy
• Providing a Professional Development Pathway
